Ericsson Carrier-Grade Wi-Fi Solutions

Ericsson is taking a leading role in the development of standards that support carrier-grade Wi-Fi, including PasspointTM (also known as Hotspot 2.0), enabled through industry bodies such as Wi-Fi Alliance (WFA), 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), and Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA).

The robust portfolio of indoor and outdoor Wi-Fi access points (AP), control and management solutions address any operator deployment opportunity. Massively scalable and designed to integrate seamlessly with the operator’s core network.

Scalability and Core Integration

Ericsson Wi-Fi equipment can be deployed and expanded quickly and easily and has already been proven in massive networks for Tier One operators.

Carrier-Grade Wi-Fi also features lightweight mediation to the mobile or fixed core and offers a flexible architecture that integrates with any carrier topology.

The Carrier-Grade Wi-Fi equipment offering by Ericsson, proven with Tier One operators in some of the world’s largest Wi-Fi networks, is comprised of:

  • Indoor and outdoor APs – these compact, robust AP’s support the latest 802.11n standard and feature a full range of power, mounting and backhaul options enabling fast and cost-effective deployment in any operator use case.
  • Controllers – supporting up to 2000 APs each, controllers are designed for scalability, wide area mobility and carrier-grade security and can be premise-based or deployed at the operator’s location.
  • Management – the management framework, comprising both Network Management and Business Intelligence, supports up to 100,000 access points (APs) and provides comprehensive fault, configuration, accounting, performance, and security (FCAPS) functions to reduce deployment and troubleshooting time and speed up network deployment while collating valuable network statistics, trends and usage information to enable faster decision-making.

Improved user experience

Carrier-grade Wi-Fi complement Ericsson’s hetnet offering to further improve the mobile broadband user experience, even in the face of demanding video applications.

Video now accounts for nearly 70% of data usage on our largest Carrier-Grade Wi-Fi networks and, by 2015, 90% of all internet traffic is predicted to be video.

Features such as advanced multicast, optimized priority queuing, rate and aggregation coalescing and latency-aware loss compensation improve throughput while reducing packet error rate, latency and jitter resulting in an enhanced user experience.

The next generation Ericsson 20EO continues to lead with the industry’s highest  performance and most flexible outdoor access node design.

The Ericsson 20EO is an extension of Ericsson's Carrier-Grade WiFi solutions, part of an industry-leading product portfolio. The Ericsson 20EO addresses new deployment models and regional requirements, and is part of Ericsson WiFi portfolio of ruggedized and outdoor-hardened products.

Offering all of features and management of other Ericsson products, the Ericsson 20EO has been optimized for managed Hot Zone and 3G Offload applications, with Edge Policy Enforcement using centralizedcontrol and a true Plug-and-Play architecture - with the latest fully compliant 802.11n, it’s ideal for streaming Video, P2P media and other Data-intensive applications.

The Ericsson 20EO provides connectivity between networks, enabling true standards-based mobility and connectivity for users moving outside or inside.
Adding standards-based beam forming, GigE ports (1 WAN port with PoE-in and 1 LAN port), integrated or external antennas and full 802.11n compliance (802.11n-2009).

Wireless Network Management

The Ericsson 20EO has a dual radio design and includes one 5 GHz and one 2.4 GHz radio, both of which are IEEE 802.11n-compliant (802.11n-2009) and each radio supports full 2x2 MIMO operation with 2 data streams.

The Ericsson 20EO also supports 802.11a/b/g operation for full compatibility with legacy clients. The Ericsson 20EO has powerful Networking capabilities, and can be managed via Ericsson NMS, GUI or CLI.

Both WEB GUI and CLI provide device level support, while Ericsson NMS also provides Fault, Configuration and Performance Management support. Ericsson NMS works with Windows, Linux or SUN Solaris platforms and can be integrated into other systems.

BelView works on either Windows or SUN Solaris platforms and can also be integrated into other Management systems like HP OpenView or IBM NetView.

The Ericsson 100NE is a state-of-the-art 802.11n, dual-band concurrent AP with 3x3 MIMO technology and support for 3 spatial streams. The 100NE enables up to 900 Mbps of throughput in a self-contained, easy-to-install form factor.

Once AP connects to a controller
  • Control channel is encrypted
    • AP has certificate
    • Controller has certificate
  • Configuration is pushed automatically to the AP via the control channel
    • AP groups under the controller have the same configuration
