Ericsson’s SmartEdge Multi-service Edge Routers (MSERs)

Carriers need to build highly versatile IP networks that are personalized, adaptive and efficient for residential and business broadband service delivery. Ericsson’s IP Networking product portfolio answers the call.

Ericsson’s SmartEdge Multi-service Edge Routers (MSERs) products offer highly efficient solutions to enable new revenue generating services such as IPTV, Video-on-Demand and interactive online gaming. SmartEdge MSERs offer multiple functionalities at the edge of IP networks that are necessary to offer these services.

Cut Costs
As a single integrated unit, the SmartEdge MSER platform offer a number of functions that would normally require multiple devices; it integrates the Ethernet aggregation, IP routing and subscriber management functions that would typically be found in three separate network devices.

It also provides support for Mobile IP, P2P traffic analysis and management, and Session Border Gateway functionalities. As such, it reduces operational effort, and the associated costs, and simplifies the deployment of new services in a controllable and reliable way.

The NetOp Policy Suite is integrated with the SmartEdge product families and simplifies deployment of revenue generating multi-play services such as IPTV, video on demand, VoIP, and high speed Internet services.

NetOp Element Management System helps reduce operations costs through automated configuration, provisioning, alarm and fault management and supports multiple management methods and protocols.

Grow Revenue with Attractive Services
Service providers understand that maximizing revenue and income from their subscribers goes hand in hand with offering new services. The key opportunity lies in capitalizing on the personalized and interactive nature of broadband and IP.

IPTV and video services are at the forefront of many service providers’ plans for new service offerings, and are the key drivers in the current wave of infrastructure upgrades. SmartEdge MSER operates at the edge of the IP backbone delivering the traffic-intensive applications that enable service providers to offer lucrative applications in Full Service Broadband.

Drive Efficiency and Manage Risks
Ericsson’s offerings take into consideration an operator’s chosen networking technologies, migration path and traffic requirements now and in the future. Designed with efficiency in mind, our IP Network solutions are pre-tested and validated, enabling reduced time-to-market and cost savings while supporting a full network migration.

Carrier-Class Operating System

SEOS is a carrier-class, modular Operating System that runs on SmartEdge platform. It represents the natural evolution of operating systems used in the carrier-class networking equipment. It is a distributed operating system that supports multiple powerful processors, and has been designed with a common infrastructure.

SEOS has been designed to be highly resilient and ensure 99.999% (or better) system availability, for a virtually non-stop network operation. SEOS ensures survival of the system in the presence of single points of failures, and rapid restart after the problem has been resolved.

SEOS supports the necessary features that enable continuous operation in the forwarding (user) plane, even in the presence of a fault in the control plane.

Reduce Costs

Operators realize that IP allows them to reduce their operational expenses drastically by consolidating multiple service networks into a single broadband network. Ericsson IP Networking products also enable new capabilities and services that ultimately streamline operations including:
  • Single service control point for all services reduces operational effort and simplifies integration into existing operations model and OSS environment
  • High availability architecture certifies mission critical applications such as voice and television
  • Modular operating systems ensures a rapid time-to-market for new features and functions
  • Fully programmable Broadband IP Engine enables new hardware functions and expanded capacity without the need to purchase and install new hardware systems
  • Scalability along three axis subscribers, services and bandwidth without trade-off
  • Low cost of operations with the ability to manage subscribers, accounts, bandwidth, and services dynamically (dynamic service selection)
  • Efficient, secure, and cost-effective support of the wholesale transport model
  • High return on investment through innovative service creation capabilities
  • Multi-vendor and multi-technology (DSL, cable, wireless, FTTx, ATM, frame relay) interoperability

  • Suitable for deployment in peering, edge aggregation and services routing applications where high-performance IP routing is an absolute requirement
  • Delivers Advanced Traffic Management with Hierarchical Quality of Service (H-QoS), comprehensive traffic shaping and subscriber management
  • Can be directly connected to an access layer of the network, such as a DSLAM, eliminating unnecessary network layers and reducing complexity
  • Support for up to 256,000 subscribers per physical device and includes all methods of subscriber encapsulation for DHCP or IP-access clients, including PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE)

Ericsson SE 100
Reduces Network and Device Overlay

The SmartEdge Multi-Service Edge Router (MSER) unifies routing, Ethernet aggregation, and subscriber management functionalities in a compact form factor suitable for deployment in smaller network environments with fewer subscribers or ports.

Benefits
The SmartEdge 100 MSER is optimized for multi-play services, enabling a smaller network environment such as those with distributed Points-of-Presence (PoPs), Remote Central Offices (COs) and Multi-Tenant Units (MTUs).

It extends the reach of the industry’s leading SmartEdge router family technology, which was previously focused on a higher-density, more costly chassis-based solution.
  • Simplifies multi-play networks by combining edge routing, Ethernet aggregation, and subscriber management
  • Allows continuous operation with its resilient operating system (SEOS) that is capable restarting tasks independently
  • Designed to deliver multicast replication for IPTV and video on demand
  • Provides IPV4 (IPv6 ready) routing with up to 1.5 million route entries and 1,000 BGP Peers
  • Key Features and Characteristics
  • Granular service control with up to eight queues per subscriber.
  • Up to 12 Gbps throughput, 7 Mbps wire speed performance in a compact 2-RU form factor.
